Phil Derby, AIA

Associate

As an Associate with a long tenure of work at KITE Architects, Phil has been instrumental in the development, production, and construction administration for a variety of KITE projects.

A team lead for many of the firms’ institutional projects, his depth of technical expertise has become an invaluable resource to the studio. His thoughtful, calm approach leads to innovative solutions for some thoroughly thorny challenges, from navigating a particularly tricky waterproofing detail to teasing out the best option during the early phases of design. Phil’s depth of experience and easy-going nature make him an effective mentor to the newer staff at KITE.

Originally from Western New York, Phil made Providence his home after completing the Master of Architecture program at the University at Buffalo in 2006. Prior to embarking on a career in architecture, Phil worked for several years as an art teacher in Montgomery County, Maryland, near Washington D.C.

In addition to his interest in the built environment, Phil is an accomplished painter and serves on the Board of the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative as Secretary. He recently had a painting selected for exhibition in the juried Pawtucket Foundation Show and is looking forward to submitting to additional shows and exhibitions in the future.
