KITE Wins National Design Award

KITE Architects’ Albert Garcia Nationally Recognized as the Recipient of Marvin Architects Challenge Award for Best Remodel at AIA Convention

May 26, 2016 (Providence, RI) – KITE Architects is pleased to announce that Principal Albert Garcia’s renovation of a Prospect Street, Providence residence has been awarded Best Remodel in the Marvin Windows and Doors Architects Challenge 2016. The official announcement was made at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Convention in Philadelphia, PA on Thursday afternoon in a ceremony hosted by Marvin.

Located in the heart of College Hill, this residential renovation project is surrounded by historic residences, as well as Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design. The project involved the complete interior and exterior renovation of a former residence that can be best classified as a contemporary styled home typical of 1970’s era suburban developments. Over the years the house and its surrounding landscape was all but obscured by overgrown trees and vegetation.

The primary design focus was to visually and spatially transform the formerly reclusive building and landscape, into a modern, progressive residence with new meaningful connections to its vibrant center of residential and student activity. Structural modifications to existing dormers and new windows bring light and views deep into the interiors of the house. Interior layout and entrances were completely redefined to improve the natural flow between living spaces and connections to the outdoors, while at the same time maintaining privacy for the owners in this urban setting. Complete renovations transformed the existing structure into a residence in keeping with the quality and character of the surrounding neighborhood, while maintaining the overall modern spirit of the original residence.

In describing the project’s award winning appeal, Judge Manny Gonzales praised Garcia’s work, stating “The remodel takes a tired and dated existing home and transforms it into an edgy contemporary winner. The open ceiling and two dramatic window walls allow light to cascade into the home as it plays off the white walls and wood floors creating a museum like quality to the space.”
